At the end of the internship, students should be able to:
- Implement best practices in doctor-patient relations (consultation, rapport, information, clarity, obtaining consent)
- Be able to take a medical history and perform a physical examination in an outpatient and home setting
- Understand and apply clinical reasoning, i.e. identify the reasons for seeking help and the nature and priority of the problem
- Assess emergencies and identify the need for hospitalisation
- Propose diagnostic hypotheses and identify the most sensitive and specific first-level diagnostic tests to confirm or rule out the hypotheses
- Interpret laboratory tests
- Interpret diagnostic imaging reports
- Focus on decision-making processes related to prescribing the correct treatment and requesting specialist consultation
- Monitor patient adherence to therapy and plan monitoring and follow-up
- Understand the issues faced by chronic patients with comorbidities undergoing multiple drug therapy
- Understand the organisation of the National Health Service and the Regional Health Service and the main bureaucratic and prescriptive regulations
- Be able to recommend preventive measures, health promotion and healthy lifestyles
- Understand the rules governing the organisation and operation of the medical practice
- Interact appropriately with the administrative and nursing staff of the general practitioner
- Demonstrate an active, collaborative, inquisitive and proactive attitude
During their attendance at a General Medicine Clinic, students will be assigned to a General Practitioner (GP) who will act as their tutor and subsequently assess them. Attendance at the internship will promote the practical training of students by participating in activities and applying the good practices learned during the degree course. In particular, students will be able to:
- Perform complete medical histories and objective examinations;
- Formulate diagnostic hypotheses, also evaluating any differential diagnoses;
- Propose the correct diagnostic-therapeutic outpatient procedure, using prescriptions correctly;
- Identify cases that require hospitalisation or urgent assessment at an A&E department;
- Participate in monitoring patient adherence to therapy and planning monitoring and follow-up;
- Understand the issues faced by patients with chronic conditions and comorbidities undergoing polypharmacy
- Acquire knowledge of the organisation of the National Health Service and Regional Health Service and the main bureaucratic and prescriptive regulations;
- Provide guidance on prevention, health promotion and healthy lifestyles.
Outpatient and home care activities at a general practitioner's office. The general practitioner act as a tutor.
