Degree course:
Corso di First cycle degree in Chemical Sciences and Technologies
Academic year when starting the degree:
2016/2017
Year:
2
Academic year in which the course will be held:
2017/2018
Course type:
Compulsory subjects, characteristic of the class
Credits:
6
Period:
Second semester
Standard lectures hours:
60
Detail of lecture’s hours:
Lesson (60 hours)
Requirements:

basic knowledge are required from the courses of general chemistry, organic chemistry 1 and physical chemistry.

Final Examination:
Orale

the exam is aimed at assessing the learning of the underlying subjects by the student and the ability to formulate independent reasoning by seizing the interdisciplinary connections of the subject. Examination takes place in writing. the examination text offers 5 open questions. Each question has the same weight and will be evaluated in N/30. the final vote will be expressed as the average of the votes of the individual questions and the examination will be over if the average of the votes is enough and if there is at most only one question that has insufficient voting. The test lasts 120 minutes. The results of the script will be communicated to the classroom when there is a chance to see the correct writings.

Assessment:
Voto Finale

chemistry and technology of polymer aims to provide the student with the basic tools to understand the mechanisms of production of macromolecules and to understand their properties according to the structure. the student will be provided with the tools to:
- classify the polymers according to the property or structure,
- predicting whether a particular molecule will react to form a macromolecule and which synthetic route will be more appropriate,
- determine and predict the basic properties of a polymeric compound,
- Understand which chemical-physical characteristics and additives are needed to add to obtain the desired material.

the course provides the following topics that will be developed during the lessons:
- macromolecules: general aspects.
- molecular weight of polymers, molecular weight distributions, experimental techniques for determining molecular weights.
- polymerizations: polymerizability of molecules.
- Stage and chain polymerizations.
- polyadditions and polycondensations.
- mechanisms, kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of radical, anionic and cationic polymerizations. examples.
- copolymers, kinetic aspects and mechanisms. examples.
- macromolecule stereochemistry.
- polymerization by catalysis mediated by transition metals. mechanism of Ziegler-Natta catalysis. application examples and catalyst development. metallocene catalysts.
- the glass transition temperature. Tg measurement methods.
- degradation processes of polymers and additives.
- elastomers: elements of rheology.
- crystalline polymers and amorphous polymers.
- thermoplastic and thermosetting.
- industrial processes for the machinability of polymers.
- Examples of commonly used polymers and highly technological polymers.
