Requirements: 

Basic knowledge of Biochemistry, Fermentation, Microbiology and Molecular Biology (generally acquired during the bachelor)

Final Examination: 
Orale

The examination is an oral exam. The aim is evaluating if the student has acquired the knowledge on main pathways and production processes for biofuels, biooils, bioplastics, bioelectricity, biogas and biohydrogen and bioplastics. Students have to demonstrate a multidisciplinary and applicative attitude and an appropriate terminology. Students will have to answer to three questions, each of one can contribute for a third of the final score. The final score is is given in 30ies: the examination is successful if a score ≥ 18/30 is gained.

The learning outcomes are the following:
- understanding and critically reviewing the biotec processes involved in biorefineries through the comprehension of scientific texts (in English) and experimental data analysis
- using knowledge to evaluate the aims and/or the potentials of microbial process to convert renewable biomasses and generate added-value products respecting the environment
- applying the knowledge in the field of microbial biotechnology to industrial processes
- demonstrating effective communication skills with the experts using appropriate terminology
- demonstrating attitude to working in interdisciplinary groups

48 hours class including one or two trips (10 hours on site lessons and visits) visiting biogas and/or bioethanol and/or bioplastic production plants. The program includes seminars by experts including Erasmus teachers from University of Chemistry and Technology of Prague.
Subjects:
Introduction to the concept of biorefineries, white biotechnology, circular economy, energy from renewable sources, waste recycling, reduction of carbon dioxide emission.
Microbes, enzymes, genes and processes to produce bioethanol, biobutanol, biodiesel, biogas, biohydrogen, bioplastics, bioelectricity.
Microbial and algae factories and plants and microbial fuels cells.

Convenzionale

Lessons by the professor, by the visiting professors, by the experts during visiting biorefineries and plants. Students will be invited to read and comments papers during the lessons.
