The course requires interest in the study of religious cultures and a good preparation in modern and contemporary history as well as in sociological subjects and intercultural mediation in general. Attendance of the class of Comparative Religious Law is strongly recommended.
Oral test
The course aims to provide future interlinguistic and intercultural mediators with essential knowledge for action within highly multicultural, multireligious contexts characterized by a significant Muslim presence. The course aims to offer a historical-juridical overview on the birth and development of the "Muslim civilization", with particular attention to the forms of social organization and its relations with the European West.
In the academic year 2021-2022 the course will address the following topics:
- Muhammad, the origins of Islam, its pillars, the first "succession" to the Prophet and the split between Sunnis and Shiites;
- The expansion of the Muslim world: the Ottoman empire;
- The decline of the Ottoman empire and the colonization;
- Decolonization: the failure of the Arab-Muslim states;
- The "Arab Springs"
- European Islam: the French and British "models"
- The "second generations": difficulties, efforts and hopes of new Muslim generations
- 'Radicalization' and 'Islamic terrorism'
- Islam in Italy

The course will take place in presenza. Monographic webinars in English will also be organized with the participation of Italian and foreign speakers.
