Basic notions of ionizing radiation physics
Students will have to take a final oral test
The course aims to provide basic notions on the dosimetry of photon beams produced by linear accelerators for clinical use and to introduce the rationale for the clinical use of ionizing radiation in Radiotherapy treatments.
We will illustrate the fundamental principles of radiobiology in order to explain the interactions of ionizing radiation-biological material (from the cell to the human being) and the response of biological tissues to different treatment modalities.
The course can be considered preparatory to specialized studies on the applications of Physics in Medicine.
The course will address the following topics:
• Basic operating concepts of linear accelerators
• Physical and dosimetric characteristics of high-energy photon beams
• Dosimetric quantities and units
• Radiation-matter interaction
• Elements of biology
• The effects of ionizing radiation
• Dose-Response Report in Radiotherapy
• Radiobiological models
• Radiation damage
-
At the end of each lesson, students will receive a paper copy of the slides presented with bibliographical information on the topics covered
The course includes lectures and visits on site of the Radiotherapy Department.
Students can be received by appointment one day a week (milena.frigerio@asst-lariana.it)
