The student needs to have met the requirements as established by the Subjects Guide of the Course of Studies.
At the end of the course the student has to take an oral exam. The candidate will be examined on the topics related to the syllabus of the integrated course. Not only will the candidate’s knowledge and learning ability be evaluated, but also his/her independence of judgement and communication skills will be assessed.
The marks are out of 30, where 18 is the minimum required to pass the exam.
The course is designed to provide dental students with the necessary skills to recognize, diagnose and treat the main lesions affecting the oral mucosa. Particular emphasis is placed on the ability to generate a differential diagnosis in order to identify those lesions at risk of malignant transformation. Besides, the student will be asked to demonstrate his/her ability to establish the connection between the most complex systemic diseases and their oral manifestations. This is very important to develop a multidisciplinary and structured approach aimed at the diagnosis of systemic pathologies starting from oral findings.
1. Embriology, histology, oral cavity anatomy (oral mucosa, major and minor salivary glands, the tongue, jaw bones);
2. Anatomical variations of the oral mucosa (Fordyce granules,disembriogenetic lesions);
3. Anatomical variations of the tongue including ankyloglossia, fissured tongue, hairy tongue, crenated tongue);
4. Fibrous papulae, exostosis, torus palatinus;
5. White lesions (oral hyperkeratosis, frictional hyperkeratosis, tobacco-associated lesions, idiopathic leukoplakia, genodermatosis, oral lichen planus and lichen planus-like lesions, hairy leukoplakia, oral candidiasis and its clinical presentations,oral submucous fibrosis;
6. HPV (HPV infection: epidemiology and systemic correlations, HPV and oropharyngeal cancer, squamous papilloma, verruca vulgaris (common wart), condyloma acuminatum, Heck’s disease.
7. Potentially malignant disorders and squamous cell oral carcinoma (epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic features of the diseaes), biopsy and diagnostic aids.
8. Potentially malignant disorders with reference to:
- erythroplakia- leukoplakia
- PVL, actinic cheilitis
- ulcerative lichen
