Not binding prerequisites: basics of organic and inorganic chemistry, biology, occupational hygiene. English reading comprehension.

Verification of learning consists of a written test with 30 multiple-choice questions, of which only one is the exact one or is the most accurate of the others. Questions to be answered within 60 minutes are inherent in the lesson program and the ability to link different aspects treated during theoretical lessons and practical exercises. The final vote, expressed in thirtieths, will depend on the arithmetic sum of the points obtained with each answer (1 point if it is correct, 0 if incorrect or omitted) and will average with the vote attended in the other module of the integrated course.

The course aims to provide students with the skills necessary to perform the risk assessment for workers and for the general population exposed to chemicals, as well as to perform experimental assessments for risk assessment to define risk management actions. The course aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of risk assessment for humans and the environment, knowledge of the main environmental pollutants and the main methods of study (sampling, analysis and exposure assessment) of pollutants. Elements will also be provided relating to the application of these methods for the purposes of assessing long-, medium- and short-term exposure to environmental pollutants in the context of the risk assessment procedure and for the protection of human health and the environment.

- General aspects of the chemical risk assessment (4 hours).
- Chemical risks: Fundamental principles of toxicology (general concepts, toxic effects of chemical substances, dose-response relationships, routes of exposure, metabolism and elimination of toxic substances, carcinogenesis, mutagenesis and teratogenesis) and Outline of biology, anatomy and physiology ( 4 hours)
- Main environmental and occupational pollutants Estimates of generations, techniques for planning surveys and evaluation of results, analysis of the main methods of environmental improvement (8-12 hours)
- Occupational exposure assessment to chemicals through the use of estimation models: methodological and practical aspects; reliability and representativeness of the exposure estimate (4 hours).
- Approaches and methodologies for assessing the risks associated with combined exposure to different chemicals (4 hours).
-Exposure of the general population to airborne pollutants, for the purposes of epidemiological studies and health impact on the population: exposure estimation (dispersion models; Land-use regression model), use of miniaturized sensors for monitoring selected populations and “citizen -science ". (4 hours)
- Risk management. environmental communication and information management, corrective action, environmental policies. (4 hours)
- Environmental management and integrated certification systems Changes occurred in the work organization of industrialized countries (4 hours)
- Case study applications both on substances subject to notice or restriction, and on industrial processes with a high environmental impact and therefore subject to Environmental Damage Assessment and related corrective actions (petrochemical, iron and steel, industrial accidents, waste-to-energy plants) (4 hours)
