At the end of the course the student has to take a written exam. The candidate will be examined on the topics related to the syllabus of the integrated course. Not only will the candidate’s knowledge and learning ability be evaluated, but also his/her independence of judgement and communication skills will be assessed in regard to the fundamental principles of oral surgery.

The course is designed to give dental students a sound grounding of the main techniques used in odontostomatological surgery.
After an initial in-depth study of the oral cavity anatomy (great attention is focused on the most important key anatomical structures that are encountered during clinical practice) the main surgical interventions will be described in detail, highlighting the guide-lines and contraindications that distinguish odontostomatological surgery.
Dental avulsion (simple and complex), the extraction of impacted dental elements, maxillary cysts, the surgical-orthodontic retrieval of impacted teeth, the apicoectomy technique are the core subjects of the course, as well as an introductory outline of implantology and guided tissue regeneration, propaedeutic to the following courses. Great attention will be also focused on the criteria for the management of the surgical flap and the intra- and postoperative complications.

The course consists of standard frontal lessons for a total of 60 hours. The lectures are scheduled and their timetable can be consulted on the website of the Course of Studies. Slides are used by the teacher as a didattic support.
