Detail of lecture’s hours:
Lesson (36 hours)
Requirements:

None

Final Examination:
Orale

In order to verify the learning of the knowledge and skills given during the lessons, an oral examination will take place. The questions will verify the knowledge of biological / biochemical structures such as glucose, ribose, glycogen (alpha and beta glycoside bonds), protein-forming alpha-amino acids (peptide bonds), saturated fatty acids at 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 carbon atoms, unsaturated fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, linolenic), triglyceride and phosphatidic acid (base structure of glycerophospholipid), cholesterol, adenosine triphosphate, DNA and RNA carbon structures. In addition, the characteristics of such macromolecules and their reactivity have to be discussed. During the examination will also be required to discuss topics of general and organic chemistry such as chemical bonds, gas theory, thermodynamics, liquids and solids, solutions and their properties, reaction rates and major reactions, chemical equilibria, acids and bases, pH, Buffer solutions, electrochemicals and reactivity and properties of the various organic substituents and contextualize them in the main biological macromolecules.

Assessment:
Voto Finale

The course aims to provide basic knowledge to understand the main biological and cellular phenomena using a chemical approach.

Students will be provided with the following knowledge and skills:
Knowledge of the main aspects of general, organic chemistry and biolocgical macromolecules
Ability to correlate these general aspects with biological reactions and of particular interest in the oral biology

General chemistry
Atomic model, periodic table of elements and electronic structure, chemical bonds, gas theory, thermodynamics, liquids and solids, solutions and their properties, reaction rates and major reactions, chemical equilibria, acids and bases, pH, buffer solutions, electrochemistry.

Organic chemistry
Hydrocarbons, aromatics, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, carbonyl groups, fatty acids, heterocycles, amines and amides.

Biological chemistry
Sugars, amino acids, lipids, nucleotides.

The course will be provided with frontal lessons (36 hours, 18 lessons), which include slides projection (in Italian, but in case of recent publication, also in English). During the classroom discussion, students are encouraged to interact with the teachers with questions and curiosities. During the lessons the teacher will also present daily cases and facts that can explain the application / importance of the subject in oral biology.
Students are required to attend the lessons as set out in the teaching regulations of the course and sign the attendance sheet to be able to take the exam.
Teachers will commit the presentations used during the lessons and other material of interest (articles) through the University computerized platforms (eg elearning) to which students have access.

In the presentations of the teacher there may be links to web pages for further information. For student reception, make an appointment by email with the teacher.
