Knowledge of biochemistry, physiology and anatomy is needed to understand the topics discussed in the course.

Aim of the course is to systematically discuss most common diseases of Gastroenterology
In particular, for every disease the following topics will be discussed: definition, epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, prognosis, therapy (hints)

Oesophageal diseases
- diverticula;
- hiatal hernia;
- motor disorders;
- gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus and esophagitis;
- dyspepsia;
- benign and malignant oesophageal tumors.

Gastric and duodenal diseases
- Helicobacter Pylori;
- acute and chronic gastritis;
- peptic ulcer disease;
- benign and malignant gastric tumors;
- upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding.

Bowel diseases
- diarrhea: cause and classification;
- disorders of absorption;
- intestinal infections;
- chronic inflammatory diseases (Crohn’s disease e ulcerative Colitis);
- celiac sprue;
- irritable bowel syndrome;
- diverticula and complications;
- colorectal cancer;
- lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding;
- appendix diseases;
- anal diseases;
- acute abdomen;
- acute intestinal obstruction.

Liver and biliary tract diseases
- the hyperbilirubinemias: definition and pathogenesis; congenital (Gilbert’s jaundice), liver and obstructive jaundice;
- liver steatosis;
- viral hepatitis A, B, C;
- toxic and drug-induced hepatitis;
- alcoholic liver disease;
- cirrhosis: etiology and natural history; complications: portal hypertension, ascites, esophageal varices, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome;
- benign and malignant tumors;
- cholecystitis; gallbladder and bile duct stones

Pancreas diseases
- acute and chronic pancreatitis
- benign and malignant tumors
