LINGUA INGLESE ED ESERCITAZIONI DI LINGUA INGLESE (III ANNO PRIMA LINGUA SCELTA)1
As classes and tutorials are fully taught in Italian and English, students will be expected to be proficient in Italian (CEFR C1) and in English (CEFR B2+) with some C1 competences.
Students who do not meet the language requirements are to complete specific computer-based language training and a self-study language programme at the University Language Lab.
The course aims to enable students to develop their written linguistic mediation skills from English into Italian and from Italian into English. Particular focus will be put on different language styles, registers and cultural contexts. Students will be able to choose the most appropriate translation strategies to translate general and specialized texts through linguistic, text and context analysis.
Tutorials are an integral part of the course and are designed to enhance English communication skills in a professional and academic perspective. Students will develop their oral and written communication skills in order to use the English language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. They will be able to produce clear, well-structured and articulate texts on complex issues, mastering speech and discourse structures, linking and cohesion techniques as required by the advanced level of Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). The abilities include:
• Comprehension of a wide range of long and complex texts and recognition of the nuances of meaning
• Ability to express ideas spontaneously and fluently without excessive effort using idioms
• Flexible and effective use of the language for social, academic and professional purposes
• Ability to create well structured and detailed texts on complex topics, showing competence in the use of connectives and elements of cohesion
The institutional course lasts one year and is divided into two modules.
The first module will cover:
1. Introduction to translation
2. The translator’s tools
3. Text types
a. narrative texts
b. descriptive texts
c. expository-informative texts
d. argumentative texts
e. regulatory texts
4. Translation strategies and procedures
a. Context, style and register
b. Readership
c. Rolling translation
d. Vocabulary and terms
e. Linguistic review and editing
5. EN-IT translations: exercises
The second module will cover:
1. Contrastive analysis of Italian and English
2. IT-EN translations: exercises
Tutorials last one year and will cover Units 7 to 12 of the manual Keynote:
Unit 8.
Language skills: cause and result.
Functions: cause-and-result relationships; work issues; Taking part in a meeting.
Pronunciation: voicing in final consonants; emphasizing the main focus of the sentence.
Unit 9.
Language skills: intensifying adverbs.
Functions: talking about stress; having difficult conversations.
Pronunciation: stress with intensifying adverbs; polite and assertive intonation.
Unit 10.
Language skills: passive reporting verbs; qualifiers.
Functions: facing risks; discussing alternatives.
Pronunciation: saying lists.
Unit 11.
Language skills: subordinate clauses.
Functions: talking about a vision of the future.
Pronunciation: intonation in subordinate clauses; sure and unsure tones
Unit 12.
Language skills: future in the past.
Functions: past views of the present; talking about financial decisions; making arrangements.
Pronunciation: sentence stress in explaining outcomes and in making arrangements.
