The course is an introduction to political dynamics, social and cultural changes which in-volved the history of contemporary Turkey, starting from a debate on major reforms during the late Ottoman Empire.
Different texts and articles, including audiovisual materials, will be analyzed. The aim is to provide students with theoretical instruments to discuss the complexity of the region. Therefore, following an historical introduction, different thematic focus will be introduced (secularization and Islam “a là turca”; gender issues, Kurdish issue, cultural memory and urban changes, Turkey’s geopolitical relevance in the Middle East).
By the end of the course, students should demonstrate, in a written paper and oral exami-nation, to be able to recognize Turkish peculiarities and historical developments.

From Central Asia to Anatolia: Turkish populations.
• The Ottoman heritage and political transformation in the 19th century.
• The foundation of the Turkish Republic (1923) and Atatürk’s reforms;
• The transition to multi-party system.
• From Turgut Özal’s neoliberal politics to Islamic parties.
• AKP Party: rising and ruling.
• Thematic focus: Laiklik - laicity and Islam “a la turca”.
• Thematic focus: national identity and minorities.
• Thematic focus: gender issues.
• Thematic focus: Cultural memories and urban development.
• Thematic focus: Turkey in the Euroasiatic geopolitical chessboard.
