HEMOSTASIS AND COAGULATION
None
The main objective of the course is the learning of physiological mechanisms of coagulation and of the correct interpretation of the principal laboratory diagnostic tests, both general and specific tests. Subsequently, during the course the most common clinical conditions requiring laboratory assessment of coagulation will be presented, both for thrombosis and bleeding. Finally, the main characteristics of antithrombotic drugs and the indications to their monitoring or measurement in clinical practice will be discussed.
At the end of the course, the student will achieve the following skills:
1) Knowledge of the mechanisms of blood coagulation: primary haemostasis, secondary haemostasis, and fibrinolysis.
2) Knowledge of the main mechanisms, clinical presentations, and therapeutic principles of the most common bleeding disorders
3) Knowledge of the main mechanisms of arterial and venous thrombosis
4) Knowledge of the clinical meaning of thrombophilia testing
5) Knowledge of the main antithrombotic drugs
6) Interpretation of the most important coagulation tests
The course will deal with the following clinical contents: physiology of hemostasis, pathophysiology of arterial thrombosis, pathophysiology of venous thrombosis, thrombophilia, haemophilia, von Willebrand disease, principles of pharmacology of antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs.
