Formalities
EU NATIONALS
You may stay in Italy for as long as you like: you only need a passport or ID card.
NON-EU NATIONALS
- You may enter Italy for study purposes if you have a valid Passport and an entry Visa issued by the Italian Embassy or a consulate in your home country. You cannot apply for a visa once in Italy. For information about getting a Visa-type D for Italy from your country, have a look at the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry website.
- You must apply for a Residence Permit, a card similar to a credit card; it has a microchip and a machine-readable magnetic strip containing the cardholder's personal details, photo and fingerprints in digital format. The Residence Permit for study purposes is issued by the Police Station (Questura) of the province where where you will live and entitles you to live temporarily in Italy. The validity of the Resident Permit is one year: under current regulations it will have to be renewed each year. Applications for Residence Permit for study purpose must be submitted within 8 working days from the arrival in Italy, by going to a “CAF Office” or by going to any Italian Post Office and asking for a “kit”. The “kit” consists of an envelope with a yellow stripe and contains two forms and a list of instructions.

- The "Codice fiscale" is a 16-character alphanumeric code issued free of charge by the Revenue Agency to identify Italian nationals and foreign residents. You need to have your own "codice fiscale" to enrol in any Italian university, open a bank account, sign any type of contract (rental, phone line, ...), register with the National Health Service (SSN). International students have to apply for a “codice fiscale” in person at the local tax office “Agenzia delle Entrate”.
Accommodation
Looking for accommodation? The University of Insubria offers accommodation for students and visitors in 3 University Residences, according to availability.
To take advantage of the accommodation service, students must meet the criteria established by a public Call, also known as “Bando”, published annually during the Summer.
Students participating in international mobility programs (Erasmus/Double Degree):
REGISTRATION (already available)
First of all, applicants must create an account on this webpage: https://uninsubria.esse3.cineca.it/AddressBook/ABStartProcessoRegAction.do (English version available by clicking the menu link). Instructions on the account creation are available in the attached .pdf. The registration procedure is already available therefore you can create your account starting from now;
Apply through: https://uninsubria-ol.dirittoallostudio.it/apps/V3.1/sol/public/index.php (English Version available by clicking the UK flag) using the credentials generated with the registration procedure. Login with your newly created credentials and click the “Housing Competition Call” tab. You will be first required to identify your profile (choose Erasmus Student or Double Degree Student), then you will be required to indicate the Town to be chosen according your field of Study; finally you will be required to choose the period of stay among the Options “Winter Semester, Spring Semester, Full Academic Year”.
Degree Seeking International Students:

You will be first required to identify your profile (choose Degree Seeking), then enter all the required data and upload the required documents (Qualifications with final grade, Curriculum Vitae, Motivation Letter).

Health
People living in Italy can receive their medical assistance through a mixed public/private system.
EU NATIONALS
Eu citizens holding a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can use Italian National Health Service (SSN) as they are covered by their home health insurance.
NON-EU NATIONALS
Foreign students have various options for health insurance:
- enrol with the Italian National Health Service (SSN)
- take out a private health insurance policy in their home country (check if you have an Home University insurance)
- take out a health policy with an Italian insurance company
NB: Non-EU students must have health insurance (a receipt for a health insurance premium) in order to apply for a residence permit. The health insurance will not be valid for longer than the period covered by residence permit.
Italian Language Course
The University of Insubria delivers a free 30-hour Italian language course to both incoming Erasmus+ and International students.
Upon arrival, they receive information as to how to participate in the course.
Libraries
This guide provides international users with an overview of the main services and facilities offered by Libraries like the online services, the off campus access to electronic resources, loans, and interlibrary loan and document delivery services.
Scholarships

The University offers different grant opportunities:
- REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS (borse per il diritto allo studio universitario, erogate con fondi regionali)
The University of Insubria manages directly the policies supporting the students rights. The Regional Scholarship (borse per il diritto allo studio universitario) are financed by the Lombardy Region and the Ministry of Education, besides, the University of Insubria assures the financial coverage to all eligible students, in addition to the above mentioned funds.
These scholarships are granted upon participation to a specific competition.
In order to access this opportunity students must fulfill requirements based on both academic merit and economic situation as specified in the competition notice.
The amount of the scholarship depends on the economic situation and on the distance between the students home and the university seat.

This opportunity is available to particularly deserving students enrolled to the first year of Bachelor and Master Programs.
These scholarships are granted upon participation to a specific competition. Two specific calls are published every year, one for students enrolled to the first year of Bachelor and single cycle Master programs and one for students enrolled to the first year of Master programs.

This opportunity is available to excellent international, willing to regularly enroll at the first year of the Bachelor or Master degree programs.

ISEE for foreign students
The ISEE is an indicator of the economic condition (family information and incomes produced abroad) that can be requested to a CAF (Tax Advice Centre).
